Cracking the Code: Deciphering DNA
DATE: January 21, 2014
LOCATION: Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center (Sharon Hill, PA)
This full-day workshop started with an introduction to DNA and forensic DNA analysis, before moving on to different types of forensic DNA analyses like Y-STR, mitochondrial, and non-human DNA. It also included the collection and preservation of biological evidence. A quick primer on blood stain pattern interpretation was included, as the size and shape of a blood stain is more important than whose blood made it. Hands-on exercises included tape/scraping blood stains, vacuum-swabbing, and how to properly swab guns for DNA.
